Protecting Your Investment
You just spent hours in the chair achieving the perfect shade of blonde, a rich brunette, or a vibrant red. The absolute worst thing you can do is let that beautiful color wash down the drain during your next shower. Color maintenance starts the minute you leave the salon.
1. Wait Before You Wash
Try to wait at least 48-72 hours before washing your hair after a color service. This gives the cuticle layer time to fully close and trap the color molecules inside the hair shaft. Washing prematurely forces the cuticle open, allowing the new dye to slip right out.
2. Turn Down the Heat
Hot water is incredibly damaging to hair color. It opens the cuticle and leaches out the dye. Always wash and rinse your hair with lukewarm or cool water. This seals the cuticle, locking in moisture and color while adding incredible shine.
3. Sulfate-Free is the Way to Be
Sulfates (like SLS and SLES) are harsh detergents that strip the hair of its natural oils and synthetic color. Only use professional, sulfate-free color-safe shampoos and conditioners recommended by your stylist. If you're a blonde, incorporate a purple shampoo once a week to banish brassy tones.
4. Thermal Protection Always
Heat styling tools like straighteners and curling irons literally bake the color out of your hair, leading to fading and dullness. Always, always apply a high-quality thermal protectant spray before using any hot tools.
Finally, don't skip your gloss or toner appointments! A quick 30-minute toning session halfway between your major color appointments will refresh your shade and buy you weeks of beautiful color.
