The Secret is in the Prep
A phenomenal, salon-quality blowout doesn't rely entirely on the blowdryer or the round brush—it's actually about 70% preparation and 30% execution. If you prep your hair correctly, the actual blow-drying process becomes infinitely easier and your style will last days longer.
1. The Double Cleanse
For a blowout to have real volume and bounce, your roots must be impeccably clean. A single shampoo run isn't enough to remove all product buildup and scalp oils. Shampoo twice—the first wash breaks down the oils, the second actually cleans the scalp. Focus the shampoo only on your roots.
2. Condition Carefully
Only apply conditioner to the mid-lengths and ends of your hair. If you put conditioner near your scalp, your blowout will be flat and greasy within hours. Rinse the conditioner out completely with cool water.
3. Towel Dry Gently
Don't aggressively rub your hair with a rough terrycloth towel; this creates frizz and roughs up the cuticle. Instead, use a microfiber towel or an old cotton t-shirt to gently squeeze and blot the excess moisture from your hair.
4. The Product Cocktail
While your hair is still damp, apply your product cocktail. For volume, apply a root-lifting mousse or spray directly to the roots. For smoothness, work a lightweight blowout cream or serum through the mid-lengths and ends. Always finish with a heat protectant.
5. Rough Dry First
Never start round-brushing dripping wet hair! It will take forever and cause immense heat damage. Use your fingers and the dryer on medium heat to "rough dry" your hair until it is about 80% dry. Once it's only slightly damp, section it clips and begin your round brush work for that smooth, bouncy finish.
